LAKE TAHOE FACTS

The Lake:

  • Lake Tahoe is 22 miles long (n/s) and 12 miles across (e/w).
  • The average depth is 989 feet, and the maximum depth is 1,645 feet.
  • The lake is fed by 63 streams and 2 hot springs.
  • The Truckee River is the only outlet.
  • The water from Lake Tahoe never reaches the ocean, it flows through Reno, and feeds into Pyramid Lake in the high desert of Nevada.
  • Lake Tahoe does not freeze over in the winter.
  • Water temperatures rarely go below 40°F, and rarely rise above 70°F.
  • Lake Tahoe was formed by faults in the earth's crust. 2 major faults created the Carson Range on the East, and the Sierra Nevada's on the West.

The Mountains:

  • Elevation at lake level is 6,229 feet above sea level.
  • Highest peak; Freel Peak, 10,881 feet.
  • Highest peak ski resort; Heavenly, Monument Peak, 10,067 feet.

Weather:

  • Our average temperature in January is 27°F, and in July is 61°F.
  • We receive an average of 213 inches of snow each year (more at the peaks), and still manage 307 days of wonderful sunshine.
