Truckee offers great opportunities
for anglers with some of the best fishing in the Sierras.
The variety of lakes and steams gives the angler many choices
and makes this region one of the most popular fishing destinations
in California.
|
Fishing is typically good all year with the exception
of a few days in August. However, even in August, the
angler who is willing to hike into the backcountry can
be rewarded with some great fishing and spectacular
scenery. A variety of methods can be used to catch the
fish in Truckee. In the streams, one can baitfish, spinfish
or fly fish. The species of fish found in our steams
include rainbow, brown, brook and golden trout in the
higher elevations. Mountain Whitefish are also caught
in some of our local steams.
In lakes, anglers can baitfish from boat or shore, spinfish
and troll. Fish found in lakes include the same species
found in steams. In addition, one may also find Mackinaw
(lake trout) and Kokanee salmon in our regional lakes.
If fishing for Mackinaw, it is advisable to obtain
the services of a licensed guide. This is important
for two reasons. First, because of the specialized gear
that is necessary to go after these fish because of
depths that they typically inhabit. Second, guides know
how to fish their home waters, and can locate the fish
for you. This translates into a better chance of a successful
fishing trip.

A valid California fishing license is required for those
persons 16 years and older. They can be obtained at most shops
that sell fishing tackle.
Many of Truckee's local waters have some restriction or some
form of special regulations. It is up to the angler to read
the California Sport Fishing Regulations prior to fishing
in any of our local waters.
